- Mormon Battalion - The Mormon Battalion was the only religious "unit" in American military history serving from July 1846 to July 1847 during the Mexican-American War. Unlike other ethnic or racial units such as the United States Colored Troops of the Civil War, the Buffalo Soldiers in the Indian Wars, or the Japanese-American 442nd Infantry Regiment that fought in World War II, the Mormon Battalion was unique.

- Pomfret, South Africa - Pomfret is a desert town, the site of an old asbestos mine, on the edge of the Kalahari desert in northwest South Africa.
