Wikipedia Articles
- Mitochondrion - In cell biology, a mitochondrion (plural mitochondria) is a membrane-enclosed organelle that is found in most eukaryotic cells. Mitochondria are sometimes described as "cellular power plants," because they generate most of the cell's supply of ATP, used as a source of chemical energy.
- Proto-mitochondrion - The proto-mitochondrion is the ancestral bacterial endosymbiont from which all mitochondria
- Malate-aspartate shuttle - The malate-aspartate shuttle (sometimes also the malate shuttle) is a biochemical system for translocating electrons produced during glycolysis across the impermeable inner membrane of the mitochondrion for oxidative phosphorylation in eukaryotes. This allows the reduction equivalents of the cofactor NADH produced in the cytosol to reach the electron transport chain in the mitochondria and generate ATP.
- Desoxycorticosterone - Desoxycorticosterone (11-deoxycorticosterone) is a mineralocorticoid secreted from Zona reticularis and Zona fasciculata of the adrenal gland. In the cytosol of the mitochondrion, pregnenolone is converted to either androgens or 11-deoxycorticosterone and 11-deoxycortisol by enzymes of the endoplasmic reticulum.
- Frataxin - Frataxin is a small protein, localized to the mitochondrion. The function of frataxin is not entirely clear, but it seems to be involved in assemby of iron-sulfur clusters.
