- Radius of curvature - The distance from the center of a sphere or ellipsoid to its surface is its radius. The equivalent "surface radius" that is described by radial distances at points along the body's surface is its radius of curvature (more formally, the radius of curvature of a curve at a point is the radius of the osculating circle at that point).
- Stokes radius - The Stokes radius, Stokes-Einstein radius, or hydrodynamic radius RH, named after George Gabriel Stokes , is not the effective radius of a hydrated molecule in solution as often mentioned. Rather it is the radius of a hard sphere that diffuses at the same rate as the molecule.
- Schwarzschild radius - The Schwarzschild radius (sometimes historically referred to as the gravitational radius) is a characteristic radius associated with every mass. It is the radius for a given mass where, if that mass could be compressed to fit within that radius, no known force or degeneracy pressure could stop it from continuing to collapse into a gravitational singularity.

- Equivalent pitch radius - Equivalent pitch radius is the radius of the pitch circle in a cross section of gear teeth in any plane other than a plane of rotation. It is properly the radius of curvature of the pitch surface in the given cross section.
